The name of the city originates from that of a French governor at the time of the colonial occupation by France: Mahé de la Bourdonnais. Previously, it was created by the Dutch when they landed on the island. The surrounding rivers supplied it with drinking water, which was a definite advantage for the Dutch settlers. In addition, by climbing to the heights of the city, they could enjoy an exceptional panorama of the bay of Grand Port. Once called Bourg-Mahé (this name appeared for the first time in 1804), it quickly took the name of Mahébourg. General Charles Decaen then changed its name to the city of Port-Impérial. But when the English took control of the island, they gave the city back its name of Mahébourg. The city still retains an undeniable trace of its colonial past today, with its colonial-style houses, its vestiges and ruins from the French and English eras. The common name "tamarind" represents a tropical fruit whose existence has been proven since the beginning of the 18th century on Reunion Island. Tamarind is widely used in Creole cuisine, particularly in Mauritius.
