On-Site Medical Care

A Range of Varied Treatments

The medical care offering in Mauritius is extensive. Independent practitioners and healthcare facilities can be found in the main Mauritian cities (Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Port-Louis, Tamarin, etc.) offering general medicine and numerous specialties. The island is known for its excellent level of general surgery, as well as the treatment of serious infectious diseases, cancer, diabetes, etc.

Consultation Prices in Mauritius

Public healthcare services in Mauritius are free and accessible to all Mauritians and residents of the island. Private healthcare is expensive. A consultation with a general practitioner costs between 20 and 30 euros. Specialists charge up to 40 euros.

Free Healthcare

Due to the free nature of hospitals, healthcare, and medications provided in the public sector, Mauritians are not covered for health-related expenses. Mauritian Social Security only provides coverage for severe disabilities, glasses, hearing aids, and wheelchairs.

Due to the free nature of healthcare, the public health system is often saturated, unable to meet demand. This is one of the reasons why tourists who have chosen this paradise island as their destination must agree to take out supplemental health insurance.

Health Coverage

Health insurance is useful when you’re an expatriate and want to seek treatment at a private Mauritian clinic. The healthcare system for foreigners in Mauritius requires you to subscribe to a mutual health insurance plan for maximum coverage.

The Caisse des Français à l’Étranger (French Expatriates Fund) provides social security benefits for French expatriates. It reimburses all or part of the costs of hospitalisation, medication, and repatriation of French nationals if necessary.

Medical Services in Mauritius

Qualified and Competent Health Personnel

Mauritius boasts skilled practitioners of foreign origin (expatriates) and state-qualified Mauritian doctors, the vast majority of whom studied at European universities. Access to healthcare professions in Mauritius is strictly regulated, with excellent standards required in various fields.

Private and Public Medical Services

Mauritius has 5 general hospitals, 6 specialist hospitals, multidisciplinary medical practices, and numerous private clinics. Each town (the size of a city or village) has a dispensary and a medicine depot. The most popular establishments in Mauritius are the Sir S. Ramgoolam Hospital in Pamplemousses, the Victoria Hospital in Candos, the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose Belle, the City Clinic in Port-Louis, the Clinique du Bon Pasteur in Rose Hill, and the Clinique Mauricienne in Réduit. Several large establishments have a 24/7 emergency unit. Some private clinics are very reputable, such as the Clinique du Nord in Baie du Tombeau, Wellkin Fortis in Moka, and the Clinique Fortis Darne in Floréal.

Pharmacies and analysis laboratories in Mauritius

Those wishing to settle in Mauritius, applying for a resident permit requires extensive medical examinations (hematological, hepatitis, HIV, leprosy, lungs, etc.) that can be carried out on site in one of the island’s laboratories. It must be said that Mauritius has the knowledge, skills and equipment necessary for advanced analyses such as in the case of cancer treatment, radiology, etc.

Equipment of Mauritian Establishments

Mauritian facilities undergo rigorous regular inspections. Equipped with state-of-the-art operating rooms, the healthcare facilities are equipped with cutting-edge technology (CT scanners, radiology, etc.). These healthcare facilities provide quality care for both locals and visiting foreigners.

Medical Tourism

Mauritius is a leading medical tourism destination in the Indian Ocean. Thanks to its medical infrastructure and healthcare personnel, it is able to offer a quality treatment program at a very reasonable price while allowing patients to enjoy a high-end stay in a luxury establishment. This type of offer is particularly aimed at foreigners who are fans of cosmetic surgery. Botox injections, liposuction, breast implants, hair transplants, and dental care are the treatments that have made Mauritius famous worldwide.

Public Health in Mauritius

Epidemics

Life on a small island comes with its own set of health risks. However, Mauritius manages to manage health protection well through widespread, preventative communication: mosquito nets are recommended during the rainy season, drinking only bottled water, and food hygiene regulations are respected.

No tropical disease epidemics have been recorded in the last decade (yellow fever, malaria, dengue fever, chikungunya, etc.). “Turista”, allergies, infectious diseases and diarrhoea in the elderly and young children are the most commonly recorded complications.

The Vaccination Schedule

In Mauritius, as in many islands, the vaccination schedule is imposed and always includes the obligatory vaccines against influenza, measles, whooping cough, tuberculosis, pneumococcus, poliomyelitis, etc. The vaccination centre gives advice to travellers and recommends certain vaccines: get vaccinated to protect yourself against yellow fever in the event of a stay in an endemic area or against hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
